Proposed changes to Manston Surgery

Posted on:

You are receiving this letter because you, or someone in your household, is registered at Manston Surgery.

We would like to hear your thoughts on our plan to merge Manston Surgery with Ashfield Medical Centre.

We have sent one letter to each household. Please share this information with any family members who are also registered with us. If you need this letter in another language or format, please call the surgery on 01132645455.

The NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB), which organises the delivery of NHS services in Leeds, has accepted a request from both practices to engage with our patients to ask for their opinions about this proposal. We want to know what you think.

About the potential merger

Both practices are now run by the same partnership of Dr Walling and Dr Nathan and supported by the existing team that you are used to seeing.

Dr Walling and Dr Nathan joined the Manston Surgery partnership in May and took on responsibility for running the practice. The existing GPs at Manston have continued in a

clinical role, but without leadership responsibilities.

The partners are now seeking to merge the two practices so that patients can access a greater range of services, clinicians and sites.

By merging we can reduce the amount of time spent on administration, increase the amount of time we have to see patients and build a sustainable GP practice that is able to support the health and care needs of everyone in our local area.

Potential new sites

We are currently exploring the possibility of establishing a new site in the area to enhance our healthcare services. This will not be in place by the time of the merger but any potential new site will be strategically chosen to improve accessibility and convenience for our patients, ensuring that high-quality care is within easy reach for everyone in the community

Closure of the Scholes Surgery from 1 April 2026

The landlord of the Scholes Surgery site has told us that they intend to sell the building.

Dr Walling and Dr Nathan have decided not to buy the Scholes Surgery building because it is not suitable for delivery of modern healthcare services.

This means that Scholes Surgery will be permanently closed from 1 April 2026.

The dispensary on the Scholes Surgery Site will close from 14 November 2025. We appreciate that this may be upsetting for people who use this service, and we will contact those people individually with further information.

Online Access

To realise the benefits of this change we will need to bring both practices together using the same computer system.

Because of this you will be required to set up your online access again. We expect to do this in November 2025, and we will be in touch with more information and instructions on how you can access GP services online.

You will still be able to use GP practice services in-person and speak to us by phone.

Benefits of merging

Merging the two practices would bring the following benefits for patients and staff:

  • More stability and continuity of care by bringing all the staff together.
  • More available appointments with a range of clinicians
  • More effective administration and better coordination of care through one combined team.

Providing feedback

The views of our patients are very important to us. We would welcome your feedback on this proposal and will aim to answer any questions you may have.

We are running some public engagement activities Friday 12th September to 15th October 2025, and you can provide feedback in several ways:

Answers to common or frequently asked questions (FAQs) are available on the home page of our website Proposal to merge Manston Surgery and Ashfield Medical Centre – Manston Surgery and paper copies of the FAQs are also available at our reception desks.

All registered patients are also able to provide feedback through our Patient Participation Group (PPG), which aims to involve patients in decisions around the quality and range of services provided by the practice. The PPG will continue to work throughout this process, and after the merger of the practices. For more information on being a part of the group, speak to practice reception or email manstonsurgery.management@nhs.net [SR1]
